. it was a visual flight rule. so that's been confirmed by sfo. nothing wrong with that commercial pilots do it all the time. in this case, the plane made a steeper descent and essentially, got too low. it cost lift. it didn't have power. the pilot apparently tried to overcorrect, tried to get more air under him. get more lift. so essentially, pointed the nose of the plane up which is exactly what the witnesses say happened. and when he did that, you see he is still over the water. he is trying to get more lift and touchdown. when he did that, the nose went up, the tail went down and scraped along the rock barrier between san francisco bay and the end of runway 28 l. that apparently caused quite a hard hit. then the tail went off the plane and at that point, he lost all control of that airplane. in fact, it is quite fortunate that it was able to come to rest and so many people were able to walk off with very few injuries or no injuries at all. >> absolutely. thank you. if you're just now tuning in, here's what we know at this hour. some definitive number and different inty reports. 307 people on th
injuries. >>> we are were you at the sfo and at the hospital, we continue with alex savidge who talked to the chair of the ntsb. >> reporter: good morning, yes, the head of the not said it will be a multify facetted investigation. the voice pit recorder and black box arrived in washington d.c. both of those units were recovered overnight from the wreckage of the asiana flight that still sits on the runway this morning here at sfo. >> the head of the ntsb will be key to finding out certain key information about the plane's air speed and its altitude and number of other measurements just before the crash yesterday morning. overnight the flight recorders were pulled out of the wreckage. they got here about midnight or so, the chairman herself got a look at the boeing 777. and she went out to the crash site and saw where it all took place and the tail of the plane broke apart from the rest of the aircraft. the head of the ntsb, talked with her and asked her whether pilot error are to blame. they are talking about the plane coming in very low and short of the runway. she wouldn't comment sp

students here for summer camp. erica. >> all right, john yang outside sfo for us. john, thanks. >> more than 182 people were transported to hospitals. some remain in critical condition this morning. miguel almaguer is covering that part of the story for us. he's at san francisco general hospital now, the trauma center there. miguel, good morning. >> lester, good morning. of those 182 victims, many were brought to about a dozen bay area hoptds. the vast majority were brought here to san francisco general hospital. some 53 patients made their way through the front doors here. about half of them were actually small children. today, we know at least six remain in critical condition including one child who was in critical condition. so many folks were being brought here in four different waves separated by about an hour apart. that was a similar scene we saw at hospitals all across the bay area. of course the bay area's home to several trauma centers so they were certainly in good hands. some injuries include broken bones, burns, some other passengers just suffered some scratches and bruises
. when you see that wreckage on the runway or off the runway here at sfo. back to you guys in new york. >> adam, when you look at those pictures of the crash, a lot of people wondering how, in fact, did those people manage to get out of this aircraft. for miles people could see this fireball sitting on the runway. we were able to talk to different passengers there. how do they describe getting out of this aircraft? >> you know, it's interesting you mention that, clayton. one of the pilots i spoke to, watching all this coverage. i know them really well. talking about a couple of things. jet fuel isn't as flammable as gasoline. that allows you more time, buys you more time than years ago. while it takes a long time to get on and off of the plane. when we're in the back, seems like it takes forever. when you have a situation like this and all the doors open, you can get people off the plane, if there are not a lot of injuries on board, can you get them off in a minute or two. you can get to exit. it's that important to pay attention to where it is, because it's that much faster for you to
you all for coming. it's certainly been a challenging and difficult day at sfo today. i want to start by kind of reconfirming some of the facts and we'll provide some updated information on passenger numbers for you. so again, this morning at 11:27 a.m., we had an incident involving asiana flight 214. this is a flight that originated in shanghai and continued on through seoul airport on its way to san francisco. it's a boeing 777 aircraft, and our manifest counts the number of individuals on board the aircraft, 291 passengers and 16 crew for a total of 307 on board the aircraft. as i mentioned, we do have some updated information on the status of those passengers and crew, and for that i'm going to turn it over to assistant deputy chief dale karnes. dale? >> good evening. of the 307 souls on board, we had 181 total that were transported to local hospitals. of that 181, 49 were serious and were in the initial victims transported from the scene. an additional 132 were transported later on into the incident after being triaged as they were the more minor to moderate casualties. we've als

. >> in fact, more than 180 people were transported to 11 hospitals and the fire department here at sfo, there are three stations here, had no warning. all they were told, there was a hard landing. they had no warning of any distress. so when they arrived on the scene and saw the plane broken up, they had to go into action immediately, but they were not prepared for that. and san francisco airport is running at half capacity. there is some talk they will try to open up one runway -- one major one and one minor one are affected. as of right now, san francisco is running at half capacity. they hope to get one of the runways open today to move this process along. the entire process here probably won't be done for 5 to 6 days as they go through the crash site and remove all the debris here, as this investigation goes forward and the investigation itself, we are told, you won't hear back for potentially 8 to 9 months before we know for sure what happened. but we will get preliminary information from ntsb, later today in a press conference. >> back to you. >> thank you very much. >> fox news
